We were recently alerted to the incredible story of Abdi Omar, a British Somali in north London who is carving out a path as a vlogger and motivational speaker.
Abdi was born in Somalia, but moved to the UK when he was 4-years-old. He has cerebral palsy, and England gave him the opportunity to receive medical care that would allow him to get the most from life.
Even so, the change came with its own set of difficulties. At school, he was the only disabled person in his class. However, he always remembered the words his dad offered him: ‘You can’t outrun a non-disabled person, but you can outsmart them.’
Imbued by this adage, Abdi made every effort to connect with his classmates to show that he was no different when it came to learning. By age 16, he was able to fully communicate with those around him thanks to the latest technology.
These days, Abdi uses his life story as the basis for motivational talks aimed at young people. He’s recently started speaking at schools, where he encourages kids to pursue their goals no matter the obstacles that stand in their way.
Abdi also regularly vlogs on YouTube, doling out rock solid advice and opinions on everything from relationships, hard times, politics and friends. He’s also a big sports fan, so if you need hot takes on the NBA or boxing, go hit subscribe on Abdi’s channel.
Keep up the inspirational work, Abdi. We’ll definitely be following you on your continued pathway to success [key emoji].
