Mosques are not only a place of worship, they are a refuge, a haven away from everyday troubles, and a place where you are more spiritually connected to God than anywhere else.
But mosques can also be the most beautiful buildings. All around the world, mosques are a wonder for Muslims and non-Muslims. From colourful tiles to sumptuous prayer carpets and soaring minarets, they are a sight to behold and we couldn’t be more proud of these beautiful buildings being part of our history, culture and religion.
Here are a few of the most stunning and enchanting mosques from around the world, courtesy of the most creative Instagrammers out there!
The Blue Mosque, Istanbul, Turkey
Taking its name from the 20,000 bright blue tiles decorating the interior walls, this beautiful mosque was built between 1609 and 1616 and is one of the most iconic mosques. Millions visit it every year.
Jameh Mosque of Isfahan, Iran
This is one of the oldest mosques in Iran and certainly one of the most beautiful in the world. Every detail in its design is as stunning as the next one. This mosque has served as an architectural inspiration for other mosques in the region.
The Dome of the Rock, Jerusalem
From exquisite Persian tiles to the marble interior, the ‘Dome of the Rock’ may technically be a ‘shrine’ rather than a mosque, but it is so beautiful that we couldn’t leave it out! The ‘rock’ refers to the foundation stone upon which the shrine is built, which was the site of Abraham’s attempt to sacrifice his son. It’s no wonder therefore that this building is an iconic symbol of Islamic culture and architecture, recognisable all over the world.
Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque, Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates
This is perhaps the grandest of the modern mosques with an impressive 82 domes, 1000 columns, 24-carat chandeliers and the world’s biggest handmade carpet. With the gold and white reflected in the surrounding pools, at night the mosque comes to life through the ultra-modern lighting system.
