The Breadwinner – The Animation About an 11-year Old Afghan Girl That’s Been Nominated for an Oscar
Are you going to stay up and watch the Oscars? We definitely won’t, because it feels like cheating when you haven’t seen any of the films up for nomination.
However, we are slowly working our way through some of the nominees. Next on our list is The Breadwinner, an animated feature film that follows the tale of Parvana, an 11-year old Afghan girl living in Taliban-controlled Kabul.
After her father is abducted by the extremist group, Parvana takes it upon herself to provide for her family; not only through financial means, but by retelling the incredible stories her father taught her, as a way to keep everyone’s spirits up.

The Breadwinner, which is based on Deborah Ellis’ 2000 novel of the same name, has been nominated for the Academy Award in the Best Animated Feature.
Whether it emerges victorious or not, the film has fulfilled the vital task of bringing a human story to a narrative that is too often bogged down in political wrangling and cultural misconceptions.
