24 Hours Exploring the Manchester Food Scene With Halal Girl About Town
Although London is one of the top halal foodie capitals in the world, Manchester almost takes the crown when it comes to good quality and innovative halal options. I’ve only visited this booming city a handful of times but the range of restaurants that serve halal out there are fantastic. From Italian to Pan Asian to European, you are really spoilt for choice.
So, (if you’re not lucky enough to live there yourself), the next time you’re seeing a relative or friend in Manchester and only have a day to spare for the food scene, be sure to check out the following delicious establishments:
BREAKFAST
Evelyn’s Cafe & Bar is the only place you want to go for breakfast when in Manchester. Korean Fried chicken with a fried egg for breakfast? What about a side order of deliciously fluffy ricotta pancakes? Don’t worry, no one at Evelyn’s is judging you. This is halal food at its finest and is not a place to miss when in Manchester! In fact, I would happily dine here for breakfast, lunch, and dinner.
Address: Evelyn’s Cafe & Bar, G18 Tib St, Manchester M4
Halal Status: All meats served here are halal.
Pork/Alcohol: No pork but alcohol is present.
For a warm and hearty breakfast alternative, check out Chai Latte; a cosy cafe specialising in halal English breakfasts and even a desi omelette!
LUNCH
Fancy some celeb-spotting over lunch? Why not head down to Archie’s on Oxford Road, which seems to be a hotspot for the likes of Nas, Amir Khan, and, of course, me – kidding. The smashed ‘Star’ burgers are the only thing you need to order here; the cheese melts into the little pockets of the patty leading to a cheesy gooey explosion of flavour in every bite. Pair it with a creamy milkshake and you’re all set!
Address: 115a Oxford Street (Sit-down diner), Manchester, M1 5NH
Halal Status: All meats served here are halal.
Pork/Alcohol: No pork or alcohol served here.
Another American lunch alternative is New Yorker Diner, a diner serving some of the best halal chicken and waffles in the UK
DINNER
I’ve only heard good things about Tattu, but never visited due to the restaurant being fully booked each time I try to visit. But that just further confirms how fantastic the restaurant is, on top of all the rave reviews it has received. With a menu that boasts red pepper lamb chops and sweet and flaky chilean sea bass, plus a sleek and sophisticated venue, Tattu is the ideal place to take that someone special.
Address: Tattu Restaurant and Bar Gartside Street, 3 Hardman Square, Spinningfields, Manchester M3 3EB.
Halal Status: The lamb chops, wagyu beef, and all of the chicken is halal, and the halal items are prepared separately in the kitchen to avoid any cross contamination.
Pork/Alcohol: Pork and alcohol is served here.
A fantastic dinner alternative is Mughli, a casual Indian street food eatery taking Manchester by storm!
DESSERT
Credit: Black Milk.
And because there is always enough room for dessert, you must check out Black Milk in Manchester’s Northern Quarter. Their Triple Oreo Cheesecake Freakshake is an absolute killer on the waistline but how could you possibly say no to this creamy and chocolatey concoction? Black Milk also specialise in edible cereal bowls, molten hot chocolate, and – wait for it – a healthy smoothie bowl!
Check out the Black Milk website.
Address: Afflecks Palace, Oldham St, Manchester M4 1PW
For another sweet ending, Creams is always a classic dessert cafe serving fluffy waffles and crazy sundaes, too.
And there you have it, a delicious 24 hour guide to Manchester’s buzzing halal food scene. Goodness, do I wish I was a Mancunian right now! If you know of any other exceptional halal restaurants in the city, be sure to let me know in the Facebook comments.
