On her Instagram, Amira Rahim describes herself as an ‘internationally-selling fine artist’. The ‘international’ part of that description seems pretty appropriate, as we’re having a tough time pinning down where she’s actually based. So let’s just say she’s a truly global creator who, from our online scouring, appears to live in New Jersey, having briefly resided in the UAE and, for a month or so at least, in Mexico.
Anyways, Rahim’s work is all about bold, bright, abstract canvases. To our eyes, her paintings are less about form and more about feeling, and because they glow at you in multicolour, they make you feel all warm and joyful when you gawk at them. Rahim’s is a particularly good account on Instagram too, as hitting her up with a follow will ensure a predictable IG feed of brunches, selfies, and Kardashians plugging their make-up lines, is punctuated by vivid splashes of pinks and purples and blues from Rahim’s palette.
For Rahim, painting started as a pastime. On her website, she writes: ‘Art for me was always a hobby, my escape from the pressures of school, from other people, a cathartic exercise I’d do when I needed to get away. It wasn’t something I even considered when it came to picking a college major or a career. Instead, I studied for law school, fell in love with sociology, and painted when I needed a reprieve.’
Her break came when she realised her artistic skills lied in expressive, abstract painting, rather than realistic stuff. It allowed her to paint with a greater honesty and more emotion, and people took note. Rahim’s work started to sell, and she began to paint full time.
Since then, she’s sold work all over the world, exhibited in UAE and the USA, and taken part in a five-week artist residency in Mexico. Check out some of her work below.
