Attention People! The Inside of This Mosque Looks Like a Forest

If you’re the kind of person who likes to keep up to date with the renovation of mosques at both home and abroad, then you’ve almost certainly heard about the new interior at the Hamidiye Camii Mosque in the central Turkish city of Kırşehir.

However, if you rarely stay abreast of such developments, good news – we’re here to tell you about it. The mosque, which was built in the 1910s, was recently given an overhaul after the original structure fell into disrepair.

It involved more than just a lick of paint. The building was demolished and replaced with a brand new one. While the outside looks like a conventional modern mosque, the inside features a striking design that we’ve never seen the likes of anywhere else.

So how did this vision of a natural woodland wonder come to line the walls of the newly built Hamidiye Camii? Well, it’s largely down to the imam and a verse from the Qu’ran itself. The imam of the masjid, Sefa Ekinci explained his inspiration:

‘When I was assigned to this masjid as an imam, I started to gather as much information as I could about its history and also the developments that were done on the new project to date. The people involved in the project told me that they were inspired by Ayah 22 from Surah al-Baqarah from the Holy Qur’an.’

The verse in question reads as follows:

(Allah) Who has made the earth a resting place for you, and the sky as a canopy, and sent down water (rain) from the sky and brought forth therewith fruits as a provision for you. Then do not set up rivals unto Allah (in worship) while you know (that He Alone has the right to be worshipped).

Ekinci then enlisted an architect to design the forest-like interior idyll, complete with painted waterfalls, soaring trees, grass-covered floors, and wood panelling on the stairs.

We love it. Even though we’ve only seen the photos (there have been no Ummahsonic business trips to Turkey just yet) we can tell that the Hamidiye Camii must be a restorative and relaxing place to worship. As one congregant noted: ‘It’s as if I felt like I was praying in the gardens of Jannah.’

They’ve got a point. Hamidiye Camii shows how religious institutions don’t have to be stuffy and formal. You can still express your faith in a vibrant, modern – or even a very, very foresty – setting.
