All things Muslim - incredible stories & positive vibes

Black History Month: Black in the Day

October means a lot of things to a lot of people. Some call it Stoptober. Others call it Ocsober. Peeps with a lot of time on their hands call it Sober October. Basically, a bunch of the UK attempts to give up drinking and/or cigs in October.

Despite these associations, hands down the most important thing about October is the fact it’s Black History Month in the UK. Over the next few weeks, we’re going to be dedicating a few blogs to things you need to know about this #UKBHM. We’ve already introduced you to three British black Muslims who are doing big things in the world of art, media and sport; and now, we’re giving a big shout out to an incredible photo project called Black in the Day.

Black in the Day describes itself as a ‘visual journey through the Black British Experience.’ It’s made up of photos submitted by fans or collected at ‘Scanning Socials’ held by BITD, where they invite people to bring in their photos to be scanned and added to the archive.

Right now, the Instagram doesn’t feature many black Muslims – who reportedly make up around 10% of the UK’s Muslim population – but we’re sure that this will change as the project continues to grow. However, what it does provide is an extremely welcome, positive portrayal of immigrant lives and the vital role they play in British culture and society.

To education…

To industry…

Or to just looking impossibly, effortlessly cool…

“my dad at a family gathering after church.” – he’s just too cool. #throwblackthursday
