This series makes us so happy. Every single week, we’re discovering new artistic talents, often at the recommendation of our readers, who are the coolest. Yes, we’re talking about you.
This week’s artist, Fatiha Nadjet Chebil, may be one of our favourites yet. Known as Empreinte on her Instagram, the 25-year-old Algerian illustrator-painter-sketcher creates razor-sharp portraits of everything from hijabi women to henna’d hands.
While Chebil works with all sorts of media and all kinds of colours, we like her black and white illustrations the best. The drawings are striking in their simplicity, and Chebil’s monochrome style is the kind of thing you’d want framed in your living room, stencilled on walls across cities, or tattooed in your skin – if you’re into that sort of thing, of course. Here are some of our favourites:
Along with achieving the pretty good great feeling honour that possibly definitely comes with a feature on Ummahsonic, Chebil’s brilliant work has also been exhibited in many non-digital spaces. In 2015, she was featured as part of a collective exhibition curated by the Feminist Association for the development of the Person and Exercise of Citizenship, otherwise known as AFEPEC, an organisation that campaigns for women’s rights in Algeria.
Pretty impressive, considering she’s entirely self-taught.
As always, if you know of any artists deserving of a feature on the unstoppable ‘The Young Muslim Artists You Need to Follow on Instagram’ Ummahsonic series, then drop a shout-out in the comment section of our Facebook page.
